The Complex in Vitro Systems (CiS) Lab within the department of Translational Safety in Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) is seeking a driven and inquisitive Scientist 2/3 to develop, characterize, and qualify complex in vitro models (CIVMs). The CiS group deploys organoid models and state-of-the-art CIVMs, such as organoids and organs-on-chip, to support organization-wide target evaluation, lead optimization, and safety assessment. We are at the forefront of establishing new platforms and technologies to support a dynamic portfolio, novel modalities, and emerging therapeutic areas.

In this lab-based role, you will be responsible for providing scientific and technical expertise to perform activities supporting the development and implementation of CIVMs of the brain to support drug development. We are looking for a candidate with a strong experimental background in neuroscience, experience with human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived neural/glial co-cultures, and an aptitude for problem-solving. Your responsibilities will include culturing and characterizing various neural CIVMs, performing model characterization and qualification studies (e.g. microscopy, transcriptomics, calcium oscillation, multi-electrode array), analyzing data, maintaining detailed documentation, sharing scientific insights, and contributing to publication efforts.

The Opportunity:

Assisting in the development, qualification, and implementation of innovative in vitro models of the brain to support translational safety efforts.
Designing and conducting experiments to characterize such models, including assessments of cytotoxicity, electrophysiological behavior, and transcript/protein abundance using techniques such as viability assays, confocal microscopy, high-content imaging, and transcriptimomics/proteomics.
Working collaboratively and communicating clearly with groups both within and outside gRED.
Analyzing and presenting data to collaborators, stakeholders, and at outside meetings as appropriate.
Maintaining detailed electronic documentation to ensure adherence to departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contribute to final reports as needed.

Who you are:

BS/MS in Neuroscience, Stem Cell Biology, or Toxicology (or related fields) with 0-2 (Scientist 2) or 3+ (Scientist 3) years experience with hypothesis-driven research in industry or academia; compensation and title commensurate with experience.
Experience with culturing multiple neural cell types, including iPSC-derived neurons, glia, and isolated primary cells from the brain.
Experience with 3D CIVMs such as co-cultures, spheroids, organoids, and/or cells encapsulated in hydrogels.
Experience with quantitative and qualitative techniques such as qRT-PCR, RNA-seq, Proteomics, immunofluorescence (IF) / confocal microscopy, time-lapse microscopy, high-content screening, calcium oscillation, multi-electrode array, and analyses of data obtained from those assays.
Strong skills in experimental design, troubleshooting, and protocol optimization.
An inherent team player, able to prioritize team's objectives and collaborate effectively within teams. Possesses strong communication skills within and beyond the team, along with a strong work ethics underlined by scientific curiosity and rigor - an eye for detail and a drive for excellence will be vital attributes.

Preferred:

Familiarity with in vivo toxicology-related screens.
Additional skillsets of interest include: cell engineering, DOE approaches, computational data analysis and/or programming.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $100,200 to $186,000 (Scientist 2) and $120,700-$224,100 (Scientist 3) . Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
