Job Summary
This position is a key contributor to the Barnes & Noble Engineering team. The role involves assessing current warehouse designs and process flows to optimize productivity and space utilization. Responsibilities include leading warehouse improvement initiatives, creating case studies, evaluating return on investment (ROI), defining business requirements, and supporting the design, acceptance, and deployment phases. The role also encompasses designing efficient warehouse layouts, selecting suitable material handling solutions, and contributing to network modeling and supply chain expansion projects as part of the Engineering team.
What You Do
• Understands warehouse operations and identify delays and opportunities for improvement to increase warehouse productivity: observe warehouse employees, break down processes, identify bottlenecks, and identify problems related to systems, procedures, or pace issues.
• Support the growth and development of the Distribution network, including facility design, optimizing space utilization, and launching new distribution centers.
• Assess, compare, and recommend Material Handling solutions.
• Skilled in performing statistical analysis for network modeling.
• Proficient in conducting statistical analysis for inventory strategy modeling.
• Understand order cadence and waving strategies leading to an increase in warehouse productivity.
• Collaborate with Slotting initiatives: able to recommend logic, validate simulations, approve slotting moves for production, and track efficiency of inventory moves completed.
• Project management: Ability to present new initiatives for warehouse improvement, including building case studies, obtaining buy-in from stakeholders, evaluating ROI, creating timelines, and tracking project milestones.
• Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Knowledge & Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Supply chain, or equivalent work experience.
• 8-10 years' experience working in Distribution Centers.
• Solid knowledge of supply chain processes (e.g., inventory planning, warehouse, order, and labor management).
• Experience working on warehouse layouts.
• Experience in Inventory management and modeling.
• Knowledge in opening warehouses would be an asset for this role, but not a requirement.
• Experience working with large sets of data.
• Project management skills: maintain issues log, create process flows, establish critical path, and maintain documents.
• Works well under deadlines, self-starter, innovative, team-oriented, customer-focused, etc.
• Skilled in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access.
• Working knowledge of SQL.
• AutoCAD knowledge a plus.
• Excellent communication/interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with employees of different levels of the organization (Office and Warehouse employees).
• Forward thinking, strong troubleshooting skills.
• Able to adapt to varying work schedules as needed.
• 25% Travel Required
