General Summary:
William Temple House Thrift Store Truck Drivers work as part of a team to maximize daily sales. Our Drivers provide excellent customer service for our Donors during the scheduling and pick up of donated merchandise. The Drivers deliver the merchandise to the Store and move it to the appropriate processing or selling area. Nothing is more important than the contact you have with each donor. As a staff member of the William Temple House Thrift Store, you represent the William Temple House agency, in many instances you will be the first contact the donor has had with our agency. You will be called upon to convey the agency mission to customers and donors. Truck Drivers must be team players, hard workers, in good physical condition and have a positive attitude. The Truck Driver is expected to read, sign and follow the William Temple House Truck Driver Policy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Set-up Pickup Requests for Donors
• The Truck Driver will answer pages for donation scheduling. They are expected to treat every donor courteously, being helpful to individual donor needs. The Driver is responsible for knowing what items we do not accept and offering alternatives to the donor for items that we are unable to take.
Setting the Pickup Schedule for the Truck:
• The Truck Driver is responsible for setting the truck schedule for daily pickups using one-hour windows. The Driver should take into consideration the donors need when making the schedule. The Truck Driver calls the donor at least one day before the pickup to let them know the one-hour window that they can expect the truck. If the Driver is running late, they will contact the donor with a revised pickup time. When making the truck schedule the Driver should be conscious that they will need time in the morning to remove sold items from the selling floor and that they need to plan enough time to unload the truck and place items in their appropriate area between pickups. After setting the truck pickup schedule the Driver should follow that schedule. Any changes should be reported to the supervisor. There are no unscheduled stops.
Pick-Up Donations at Donor’s Homes:
• The Truck Driver is responsible for picking up donations from donor’s homes. This is the main duty and safety, and good customer service are the key ingredients for success. The Truck Driver moves the items from the home to the truck using care to not damage anything in the donor’s home or damage the item being donated.
• If the donor has items that we do not take or items in poor conditions the Truck Driver must tactfully explain why we cannot take the item and offer any alternatives that may be available to the donor.
• The Driver collects the truck fee and records the fee on the log at the store. They also provide all donors a tax receipt.
• Truck Drivers should not enter the home if the donor requires that they take off their shoes (safety) or if there is no adult present at the home. The donor or a representative of the donor must be present at all pickups.
• Truck drivers work in pairs and rarely will do a pickup alone. There should be two drivers on the truck any time a pickup is at a donor’s home.
• The Driver will log the truck mileage at each stop and make comments on items that they did or did not take.
Delivery of Items to the Thrift Store:
• The Truck Driver delivers the items to the store and takes them to their appropriate processing area. The Driver’s job is to help the store staff work efficiently and should take care to place items in appropriate locations.
• When furniture is being delivered, the Drivers will first remove sold furniture from the selling floor to allow space for the new arrivals to be placed on the floor in appropriate locations. The Driver should notify a supervisor any time un-priced items have been placed on the selling floor. If trained the Truck Drivers should price the furniture items with a partner.
Agency Pickups/Deliveries:
• The Truck Drivers will have regular pickups, special pickups, and work to do for the William Temple House. Regular pickups usually involve obtaining and delivering food from the Food Bank or other locations. Special work for the House will involve special pickups, moving items located at the House or other jobs that the Store Management or House Management deem fit for the Drivers.
Record Keeping and Deposits:
• The Truck Drivers collect Pick-Up Fees from donors and are responsible for filling out the Truck Fee log and giving the fees to a supervisor.
• The Driver provides all donors with a tax receipt.
• The Driver will regularly be asked to drop the Store deposit and get change for the store. The Driver is responsible for the deposit at this time and should go directly to the bank and return change immediately to the store.
