JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESJob Summary: This is an opportunity for a forward-thinking, creative, and strategic leader who will support the financial activities of Braille Institute of America. Under the supervision of the Associate Controller, the Assistant Controller will serve as the day-to-day supervisor over the Institute's Accounts Payable and Payroll departments.
Additionally, the Assistant Controller will be process and continuous improvement oriented with a mindset of automation, simplification, and streamlining the user experience. The incumbent will assist with policy development, as well as cultivating a customer-centric approach in the department to all interactions and requests for information from a wide range of customers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Business Processes- Analyze existing financial processes to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies and develop and implement streamlined processes that improve accuracy and reduce processing time.
- Introduce and improve automation to business operations, including accounts payable, corporate card and budgeting processes.
- Assist the Vice President Financial Officer and Associate Controller with the development and maintenance of well-designed and clearly written financial policies and procedures.
- Establish working relationships with key stakeholders throughout the organization to align financial processes with organizational goals.
- Assist Vice President Financial Officer and Associate Controller with change management initiatives related to finance operations, ensuring stakeholder engagement and support, and facilitate workshops and training sessions to promote understanding and adoption of new processes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Accounting and Operations- Oversee Braille Institute of America's Accounts Payable functions, including accurate and timely invoice and payment processing.
- Oversee Braille Institute of America Auxiliary Services, including acting as primary liaison between Braille Institute of America "Vista Store" external management vendor, food service vendor, and external event vendors (i.e. Los Angeles, County, Molina Health, etcetera.)
- Oversee Braille Institute of America's payroll area, including the timely and accurate processing of employee retirement benefit contributions.
- Special Projects -As Assigned.
- Provide administrative oversight of Braille Institute of America's corporate credit card program, ensuring clear policies are in place for card use, adequate training is provided to cardholders, and all transactions are reviewed, approved, and posted timely to the General Ledger.
- Back-up and support the Associate Controller with the following:
- Management and maintenance of the General Ledger, chart of accounts, and reporting systems.
- Annual and monthly financial closing process, including review and approval of journal entries, reviewing General Ledger and bank account reconciliations, and preparing the monthly financial reporting package.
- Preparation of the annual Braille Institute of America budget and related analysis and reporting.
- Participate in the annual audits for both the Braille Institute of America corporate entity and the Braille Institute of America 403b retirement plan.
- Other duties as assigned.
Leadership- Foster a customer-centric culture in the department by continually developing team members to proactively recognize customer needs, resolve issues, and provide a proactive positive customer experience.
- Partner with Vice President of Finance and Operations and Associate Controller for general department management responsibilities including hiring, training, providing work direction and evaluation of performance of department staff.
- Provide leadership and professional development to department staff.
- Ensure adequate training is provided to stakeholders throughout the organization on financial related policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Knowledge and Education: A four-year college degree required in accounting or related field. A working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Practices and software related to accounting operations is required.
Skills and Abilities: Position requires effective communication, analytical, auditing, interpersonal and research skills.
Attention to detail and accuracy, and the ability to establish and maintain effective business relationships with staff is needed.
Strong understanding and aptitude for accounting and other technology solutions. Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Experience: At least five years of progressively responsible professional accounting or related experience is required. Demonstrated success in leading process improvement initiatives or project teams. Prior leadership experience is desirable. Non-profit accounting experience is highly desirable.
Certifications/Licenses: Certified Public Accountant or Certified Public Accountant candidate desirable but not required.
Grade in Pay Considerations: Based upon level of experience.
Work Environment: Position works in a standard office environment.
Physical Requirements: Position operates with standard office equipment.
