Hamilton Health Sciences in affiliation with McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences is home to one of the most research intensive environments for medical research in Canada. Our research is conducted through a series of research institutes, research centres and research groups, as well as investigators who work independently. We support more than 450 researchers and their research teams and foster the development of students and research fellows. Themes and programs range from basic laboratory tests to trials in worldwide populations, involving hundreds of thousands of participants.
Position Summary
Reporting to Director of Administration, with an indirect reporting to a veterinarian, the manager will oversees all aspects of daily operations of HHSC Animal Resource Centre - ARC. The Animal Resource Centre operates one physical site which offers specialized areas such as exclusion barriers, biohazard areas, imaging and surgical suite. The position is responsible for the effective coordination, supervision, and management of the staff, facility, and equipment. The HHSC-ARC Manager ensures that all tasks are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner while adhering to applicable institutional Policies & Guidelines, Provincial and Federal legislation. The position is responsible for ensuring the care and management of animals, ensuring animal health and welfare are a priority while supporting animal-based research. The incumbent will assist the ARC Team in establishing and maintaining effective communication with users of the facilities.
Specific accountabilities included but not limited to maintaining regulatory compliance and quality improvement, facility operations, human resources, financial planning analysis and reporting.
Schedule Work Hours
Monday to Friday days, with flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
Qualifications
• At minimum, completion of a bachelors degree in Science or recognized equivalent required.
• 3 year Community College diploma in Veterinary Technology or recognized equivalent
• Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) Certification with Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science (CALAS) required; the Masters Certification should be completed post hire
• Certification as Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) post hire required
• At minimum, 6 years practical and related experience
• In-depth knowledge of legislation governing use of research animals in Canada
• In-depth knowledge of Canadian Biosafety guideline
• Excellent scientific and technical background with ingenuity and flexibility to allow for successful problem solving
• Superior communication skills, written and verbal
