Another Source’s client, the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), is recruiting for an Assistant Dean of Student Engagement & Wellness in San Francisco, CA. This is a hybrid role that is expected to work three days a week on-campus and two days remote, plus weekend coverage on-campus once a month.
CIIS seeks an innovative, student-focused leader to serve as Assistant Dean of Student Engagement and Wellness. This role supports the Dean of Students in managing the Office of Student Affairs and oversees university-wide programs, events, and services. The Assistant Dean leads student leadership development, engagement, and retention efforts for in-person, hybrid, and online programs. Working closely with students, faculty, and staff, the Assistant Dean develops and facilitates co-curricular and wellness programs that enhance student life and support the university's academic mission. They will also serve as the Dean of Students' designee when needed.

The anticipated yearly salary range for this position is $95,000- $115,000 a year, commensurate with education, skills, and experience. Relocation assistance provided.

About the Role:
The Assistant Dean provides leadership and administrative oversight for the Wellness Center in partnership with the Wellness Counseling Center Director and Dean of Students. The Assistant Dean will lead university-wide events like New Student Orientation and Welcome Week and will navigate virtual, hybrid, and in-person forms of program delivery. The Assistant Dean will also partner with the Dean of Students to develop effective assessment models for the unit and for the university.
Student Engagement:
Provide leadership and direct oversight of Student Union, including direct supervision of Student Union Fellows
Develop and implement an operational model of integral (shared) student governance based on CIIS’ unique demographic and allowing for equity in access and engagement
Provide oversight and leadership for all student clubs and organizations
Develop and coordinate innovative, creative programming to promote student engagement
Ensure that programming adopts a student learning approach, exposing students to the Institute’s and division's competencies, and fostering growth in social and cultural awareness, leadership skills, civic engagement, personal development, and service to the Institute and community
Develop a sense of community and belonging, including in-person and online community structures, for distance and satellite CIIS students, specifically in the growing areas of online, low- residency, and hybrid students
Develop infrastructure and programming to foster a sense of community and belonging among historically marginalized and minoritized students (i.e., BIPOC, LGBTQ, First-Gen)
Plan, implement, execute, and assess New Student Orientation and Welcome Week programming at the start of the fall and spring semesters
Coordinate the fall and spring involvement fairs composed of student organizations, departments/offices, and community partners
Coordinate student leadership development through retreats, meetings and various trainings
Wellness Center:
Provide direct oversight of the Wellness Center and three staff/consultants
Lead the development, implementation, and promotion of a university-wide student wellness strategy, incorporating equity, compassion, and community. For example, work divisionally and university-wide to identify strategies to increase services, support, and advocacy for all student populations and ensure the delivery of wellness services and programming to meet the diverse needs of all students
Provide strategic leadership for the facilitation and delivery of health and wellness programs to the CIIS community and is a thought leader in assisting with embedding wellness into all aspects of university culture and to lead health promotion action and collaboration locally and globally
Lead and champion efforts to integrate health and wellness practices that contribute to student success
Recommend and implement learning goals and objectives related to the promotion of healthy eating choices, optimal physical activity, positive relationships, mental wellbeing, mindfulness and yoga practices, and creating conditions for effective student and community care.
Drive innovation, inclusion, and excellence within the health and wellness portfolio
Student Affairs Leadership & Strategy
Collaborate with Admissions to coordinate the dissemination of information and materials regarding Student Affairs (i.e., Wellness Center and Student Union) to prospective and newly admitted students throughout the recruitment, admissions, and yield process. Represent Student Affairs (i.e., Wellness Center and Student Union) at Open House and other Admissions events
Assist in leading the coordination of the annual publication of the Student Handbook and other print and electronic materials for the unit
Assist with the annual enrolled student surveys. Collaborate with Institutional Research on the collection and analysis of data that addresses the effectiveness of the various student services offices. Coordinate the dissemination of analysis reporting to appropriate faculty and administrative offices and debriefs for Student Affairs
Drive innovation, inclusion, and excellence within the area of student support; reviews and creates policies and procedures.
Collaborate with the Dean of Students on developing and implementing strategic goals and objectives, using assessment data to guide continuous improvements of Student Affairs in support of student co-curricular learning and services
Assist in coordinating Student Affairs assessment activities to facilitate more data driven decision- making
Assist in management of the Student Affairs operating budget
Required qualifications:
Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, public health, or a related field required.
A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in higher education and student affairs, with a focus on graduate student populations.
Working knowledge of best practices for Student Affairs professionals.
Demonstrated skills in the application of student development and student retention theories.
Leadership skills, vision, student-centered philosophy, and enthusiasm to build on the institute’s tradition of integral education.
Strong interest in and experience with building community and communicating effectively within online, low-residency, and hybrid student communities.
Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and an understanding of the unique intersections of identity and the student experience.
Ability to develop a network across the organization and cultivate strong interdepartmental relationships.
Outstanding verbal, written, and presentation skills. Must be able to communicate and interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, and all external constituencies.
Ability to work some evenings and weekends, and to have flexibility and an openness to adapt occasional hours to suit online, low-residential, hybrid, and non-traditional schedules.
Preferred qualifications:
Prior university wellness center, health promotion, and supervisory experience preferred.
Experience with student activities or student advising preferred.
