A role in Store Design means the opportunity to apply your innovative and sustainable design and technical expertise. Your work will help define the physical experience and evolve the brand image in stores and in support of Target business strategies. You’ll interpret program and scope details to integrate them with the site design and aesthetic, including new stores inside and out, exteriors and interiors, remodels and guest experience projects.
Position Overview: The Experience Director will lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team to create innovative and impactful designs across environmental, fixtures, interiors, and architectural projects. This role requires a visionary leader who can blend form and function to create immersive, engaging, and brand-aligned physical experiences.
Design Strategy and Innovation: Lead the development of future store design strategies while managing multiple projects at different stages. Define the in-store experience by integrating aesthetics, functionality, and brand identity. Stay updated on industry trends and consumer behavior to drive innovation and concept direction. Apply your knowledge of architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems, as well as sustainability, to influence design solutions. Collaborate with senior leaders and teams across strategy, insights, merchandising, marketing, and operations to ensure store designs meet business goals and customer needs.
Project Execution: You will interpret program and scope details to integrate interior design and brand aesthetic for new stores, remodels and innovation projects. Work with store experience teams to deliver projects on time and within budget. Manage relationships with external design firms and fixture manufacturers. Develop design guidelines, standards, and playbooks for the team, and create new training or processes as needed.
Team Leadership and Development: Lead a team of Graphic, Fixture, Interior, and Industrial Designers, providing coaching and mentorship to support their growth and resilience. Align team efforts and resources with strategic goals, guiding leaders to make decisions that meet stakeholder needs. Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and excellence, promoting cross-functional collaboration and a consumer-first approach.
About You:
4 Year accredited degree (architecture, interior design or industrial design preferred and/or related master’s degree)
10-15 years relevant retail design experience
Strong portfolio showcasing expertise in environmental, fixtures, interiors, and architectural design.
Expert design and presentation ability along with communication, collaboration, organizational and project management skills.
Demonstrated industry engagement and influence, broad knowledge of retail industry.
Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, and SketchUp.
Expert knowledge of how retail interiors are designed, detailed and built. Proficiency in interior finishes, fixture design, plastics, metal and wood manufacturing processes. Sustainability expertise is preferred.
Strong creative vision and the ability to translate ideas into tangible designs.
Exceptional problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong relationships with internal clients and team members.
This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
