In this critical role, you will be responsible for all accounting operations for the IXL Learning brand. This includes the production of financial reports, maintenance of an accounting system of records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets to ensure compliance with GAAP. This position will report directly to the VP Finance and will work closely with other members of the accounting and finance team to ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will be an experienced controller with both Big 4 CPA audit experience and software technology company experience in industry.
This is a full-time position in our San Mateo, CA headquarters office.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Oversee and manage all aspects of the company's accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting
- Ensure accurate and timely production of financial statements, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports
- Perform month-end accounting close functions including preparing journal entries, analyses and reconciliations
- Responsible for the preparation of financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP as well as providing written analyses of variances against prior periods and budgets
- Review and interpret accounting guidelines, including ASC 606 (Revenue from Contracts with Customers), to determine appropriate revenue recognition for IXL School subscriptions
- Perform stock compensation expense calculations and support 409A valuation
- Develop and maintain an accounting system of records, policies, and procedures that comply with GAAP and other regulatory requirements
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive set of internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data
- Prepare and manage budgets, forecasts, and financial plans to support business objectives and strategic initiatives
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide financial insights, analysis, and support for decision-making
- Coordinate and manage the annual external audit process and liaise with external auditors to ensure compliance and timely completion
- Monitor and analyze financial performance, identify trends, and provide recommendations for improvement
- Develop and maintain cost accounting processes for management reporting
- Stay updated on changes in accounting standards and tax regulations to ensure ongoing compliance
- Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the accounting team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development
- Conduct financial evaluations of investment opportunities, mergers and acquisitions, and new business ventures
- Oversee and implement ERP accounting software to meet growing corporate needs on business and product integration
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA designation is strongly preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including significant experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller for a minimum of 3 years
- Prior experience with a Big 4 accounting firm, specifically in the audit practice, is highly desirable
- Strong knowledge and understanding of GAAP and other accounting principles and regulations
- Technical expertise in revenue recognition and stock-based compensation a plus
- Experience in the software technology industry is preferred
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems; Experience with NetSuite is a plus
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- High level of integrity and professionalism
Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The base salary range for this full-time position is $220,000 - $250,000 + benefits. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay for the position. Individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
