The Vice President, Investments will play a critical leadership role in managing the investment strategies and operations for Horace Mann. As a key member of the investment leadership team, the VP, Investments will support the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) in overseeing the company’s investment portfolio, evaluating external managers, driving risk management, and ensuring alignment with the organization’s financial goals and regulatory requirements. This role involves crafting and executing investment strategies that maximize risk-adjusted returns, align with the company’s liability structure, and enhance shareholder value. The VP, Investments collaborates with executive leadership, internal stakeholders and external advisors to position the company as a leader in the insurance industry.
Key Responsibilities:
Investment Strategy & Oversight
- Develop and implement the company’s investment strategy to meet financial objectives while adhering to regulatory guidelines (e.g., NAIC requirements).
- Lead the asset allocation process, balancing risk, return, and liquidity needs.
- Monitor and analyze financial markets, economic trends, and regulatory changes to identify opportunities and mitigate risks.
- Ensure the investment portfolio supports the company’s liability structure, including capital adequacy and liquidity.
- Manage relationships with external investment managers, advisors, and custodians to optimize portfolio performance.
Portfolio Management
- Oversee day-to-day management of the company’s investment portfolio, including fixed income, equities, alternatives, and other asset classes.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for investment performance against benchmarks.
- Prepare and review performance, risks, and compliance reporting packages for CIO presentations to executive leadership and the Board.
- Ensure alignment with the company’s enterprise risk management (ERM) framework.
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements, including NAIC, SEC, and other relevant bodies.
- Collaborate with internal legal and compliance teams to address investment-related regulatory matters.
- Collaborate with internal and external auditors related to GAAP and Statutory filings, while maintaining transparency and integrity in all investment activities.
- Maintain and enhance investment policies and guidelines in alignment with corporate objectives and industry best practices.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as a key advisor to the CIO on investment-related matters and broader financial strategies.
- Lead and mentor a high-performing investment team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and professional growth.
- Partner with internal departments, such as Treasury, Actuarial, and Risk Management, to align investment strategies with organizational needs.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or a related field (MBA or CFA designation preferred).
- 10+ years of progressive experience in investment management, preferably within the insurance or financial services industry.
- Expertise in asset allocation, portfolio management, and fixed-income investments.
- Deep understanding of insurance industry regulations, capital management, and liability-driven investment strategies.

Pay Range:
- $167,500.00 - $247,000.00
Salary is commensurate to experience, location, etc.
