Most of the automotive mechanic job postings are boring, sound the same, lack any personality, and sound impersonal. This is why I want to write a very straight forward ad with no corporate kool-aid that you’re forced to drink, and hopefully this connects with the right candidate.
We have a total of four technicians working at our shop and we have grown to a point where I need a leader to supervise and direct our mechanics. I have summarized the main points of where I’m coming from and tried to keep it short and sweet.
Who My Team & I Are:
• My name is Michael and I run Reliable Auto Repair in South San Jose which is a family run small business.
• Our shop is located at 463 Blossom Hill Road San Jose, CA 95123.
• We work on everything; European, domestic, Asian, diesel, etc.
What Are The Hours, The Pay, & The Benefits?
• The position is full time, 5 days a week, 40 hours a week, Monday – Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 1-hour lunch from 12PM to 1PM.
• The pay starts at $40.00 / hour.
• We offer full medical, dental, and vision coverage.
• We offer a complimentary $200 monthly tool allowance to help you buy new tools and equipment.
• There is a bonus structure where you earn your hourly rate multiplied by the number of hours worked beyond 40 hours a week.
• One week paid vacation a year.
• We pay for training that is offered by our vendors if you choose to attend.
What Is A Day On The Job Like?
• You arrive to work on time, dressed in uniform, and are ready for our daily morning meeting.
• Once the cars are on the lifts, it's your job to ensure the three technicians you’re overseeing get straight to work—no breaks, distractions, or downtime.
• You grab the work orders that are assigned to you and fix cars.
• As you are working, you are also responsible for helping any of the mechanics when they need help.
• You are responsible for making sure that the garage doesn’t get distracted so we can keep things moving.
• If one of the technicians is off track (ie; 1 hour oil change), it would be up to you to instruct, assist, or discipline.
• It is your responsibility to make sure that everyone clocks out at 12:00 PM for lunch and clocks back in at 1:00 PM.
• It is your responsibility to make sure everyone clocks out at 5:00 PM.
Give Me A Call If:
• You are the type of person who understands why everyone should be constantly moving and working from 8 AM until 12 PM, and then again from 1 PM until 5 PM.
• You know how to use an oscilloscope and scan tools.
• You know how to read a wiring diagram.
• You have an advanced understanding of logical data driven troubleshooting steps.
• You have A6, A8, or L1 certifications.
• You possess a smog license.
• You are as comfortable with changing oil as you are with diagnosing intermittent CAN bus faults.
• You have a good memory regarding the cars that you worked on, what the other mechanics are supposed to be doing, and what you have to accomplish for the day.
• You are comfortable being in a position of authority and providing either help, instruction, or discipline depending on what the situation calls for.
• You believe arrogant or lazy people should be kept as far away as possible from you.
• If you have ever had a coworker tell you “why are you working so fast, we’re going to get paid the same anyways” and wanted to vomit in your mouth.
Do Not Call Me If:
• You have no discipline.
• You do not keep your word.
• You have no desire to help others build their career and knowledge while strengthening your own at the same time.
• You have issues taking compliments when you’re right and taking constructive criticism when you’re wrong.
• You have no desire to gain more responsibility, make more money, and have an interesting career.
• You’re cool with coasting and live with an “I’ll get around to it” mentality.
Simply Put:
• We are a tight knit shop and this operation took me and my family years to build and perfect. We are growing and need a responsible person with good character and the right attitude to help us move forward.
• You have to be smart, pay attention, show up consistently, and lead a team of technicians.
• You will be responsible for working hard, setting examples, cleaning up messes, and making sure that there is structure in the workplace.
• I don’t need parts changers; I need someone who uses their head first and their hands second. I need someone who understands and is interested in how things work.
Final Thoughts:
• I would love to talk with anyone who is interested, whether they agree or disagree with anything that the job offer is about. Talk soon! – Michael – 408 – 230 – 2952.
