Job Summary
You will work with students learning to drive to obtain their driver's license. The ideal candidate
can create lesson plans and give constructive feedback to each student. In this role, you also
facilitate hands-on driving with students behind the wheel, monitoring their progress and helping
them put driving concepts into practice. You should be an experienced driver yourself, with the
ability to exhibit patience and follow the rules of law enforcement.
How Can I Become a Driving Instructor?
You need a high school diploma or GED certificate, driver’s license, a passing live scan,
physical from a doctor and 60 hours of certified training. You will then need to pass the
California DMV Driving Instructor license.
Is Driving Instructor a Good Career?
Working as a driving instructor is a good career if you are passionate about helping others. You
are doing important work, teaching a new generation of drivers how to safely operate motor
vehicles on roads and highways. Your responsibilities are teaching students safe driving
concepts and giving them opportunities to practice behind the wheel. You may work evenings and weekends.
How Do Driving Instructors Get Paid?
You will be paid hourly. Your pay is based on the number of hours you spend providing students hands-on driving experience. You will be paid biweekly.
How to Be a Good Driving Instructor
To be a good driving instructor, you must also be a good driver and have experience driving the
types of vehicles you are teaching students to drive, whether that is a car, motorcycle, bus, or
semi-truck. Make your students feel safe and comfortable learning to drive; inexperienced
drivers are often nervous when they are in the driver’s seat. Teach students driver safety habits,
defensive driving techniques, and state traffic laws. Driving instruction also includes classroom
lessons, so practice public speaking skills and giving presentations.
