Log Truck Driver
Position Summary
As a Log Truck Driver (Short-logger or Long-logger), you will play a critical role in the safe and efficient transport of logs from various logging sites to mills or other designated locations. This position requires strong driving skills, particularly on challenging terrain, including mountain areas, and knowledge of securing cargo in compliance with transportation regulations. You will be responsible for ensuring your vehicle is in good working order, securing your loads, and collaborating with dispatch to meet tight deadlines. Your role directly contributes to the success of our operations and overall customer satisfaction.
Essential Duties
• Safely transport logs from remote logging sites to destination points, adhering to all safety and traffic laws.
• Secure loads using chains or wrappers to prevent shifting during transit, including throwing wrappers over loaded logs and tightening binders.
• Operate in adverse conditions, including driving in snow, ice, and muddy terrain, often requiring the use and installation of tire chains.
• Maintain communication with dispatch to report on progress, issues, or route changes.
• Ensure proper documentation of all loads and maintain electronic logbooks in accordance with DOT regulations.
• Follow all FMCSA, DOT, and company safety regulations and guidelines.
• Use individual judgment during long stretches of driving alone to resolve on-the-road issues and make sound operational decisions.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
• Plan routes to optimize efficiency and minimize downtime, considering oversized load restrictions and other logistical challenges.
• Troubleshoot minor mechanical issues that may arise during trips, utilizing your understanding of vehicle mechanics.
• Coordinate with dispatch to meet delivery schedules and handle any on-route challenges.
• Ensure compliance with all company policies and safety standards, particularly regarding vehicle maintenance, safety, and load security.
• Maintain up-to-date and accurate load documentation, electronic logbooks, and vehicle inspection records.
• Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections as a preventative maintenance measure, ensuring vehicle safety and compliance.

Minimum Qualifications
• Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or Permit with the ability to meet FMCSA standards.
• Clean driving record as reflected in an MVR over the past three (3) years, with no serious traffic violations or major preventable accidents.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and DOT physical.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Proficiency in operating manual transmission vehicles.
• Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including the ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
• Ability to troubleshoot minor mechanical issues and make informed decisions on the road.
• Willingness to train with a preference for previous commercial truck driving experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Possess a valid Class A CDL with double/triple endorsements.
• Minimum of two (2) years of log truck driving experience, including short-logger or long-logger work.
• Proven track record of safe, efficient driving with a deep understanding of forestry regulations and off-road driving challenges.
• Experience in highway, forest, and off-road winter driving logistics.
• Maintain precise records in accordance with DOT regulations, including logbooks, inspection reports, and maintenance documents, to ensure smooth audits and uphold the company's commitment to safety and compliance.
• Experience using Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) to maintain accurate hours of service records.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and a commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands required to perform the essential functions of a Log Truck Driver include the following. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to meet these demands.
This position frequently requires the driver to sit for extended periods while operating the truck, as well as to climb in and out of the cab multiple times per day. Regular use of hands to signal and handle equipment is essential, along with the ability to throw and tighten load wrappers. Drivers must also occasionally stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms. Lifting objects between 50 and 75 lbs. is required.
Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Drivers must be capable of working in varied weather conditions, including mud, snow, and ice, particularly during winter when tire chains need to be placed.
The role involves driving on highways and off-road terrain, securing cargo, maintaining the truck, and requires physical stamina and experience for success.
