A2 is the nation’s largest coalition of frontline communities fighting for environmental protection. We represent almost 400 member-communities in all U.S. states and territories. We work to educate, organize and support -- with money, grant management and other technical assistance -- grassroots leaders and communities who are challenging corporate greed and governmental inertia. We also educate residents, regulators, and elected officials on the best policies to mitigate environmental harms.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, the Finance and Operations Manager is responsible for managing various finance and operations tasks to ensure smooth day-to-day operations of A2. The position requires proactiveness, strong organizational skills, a willingness to pitch in and support our grassroots work, and a keen eye for detail.
While the position can be fully remote, we are in the midst of setting up satellite offices in New Orleans, St Louis, Little Rock and Biloxi, and our preference would be to have the Finance & Operations Manager work out of one of these offices at least part of the time.
Responsibilities:
Financial management: filing invoices, receipts and W9s, creating vendor entries, categorizing transactions, and carrying out monthly reconciliations in QuickBooks.
Financial reporting: preparing and distributing monthly financial reports, including cash flow, Mutual Aid, Profit & Loss, Budget vs Actual, Grants Payable, and Balance Sheet reports.
Grants management: managing A2’s grant tracking and sub-grant distribution process; invoicing funders based on the terms of the grant agreements; tracking and managing sub-grant payments, and ensuring W9 forms and sub-grant agreements are in place.
Human resources: managing incoming employee onboarding, including enrolling new hires into TriNet; creating employment contracts for new hires; and running payroll.
Digital platforms: Manage the member database in AirTable, overseeing the accuracy and functionality of the database, and providing regular staff training and updates on the database. Support the team to ensure the organization and upkeep of the shared drive.
General support to our community organizing work and other duties as needed.
Skills and Qualifications:
Managing processes, grant management, financial software (QuickBooks preferred), payroll software, financial skills, analyzing information, Microsoft Office suite Google environment and AirTable
You will ideally have:
- Three of more years’ experience in accounting
- Bachelor’s degree, accounting/finance focus preferred
- Experience with nonprofit organizations and grant compliance.
A2 is a mission-driven organization working on behalf of our members. We ask that staff:
- Are committed to environmental protection and working with low-income people.
- Work flexibly, responding to the needs of our members and organization. This may mean shifting from one task to the next.
- Are willing to travel to members communities, conferences and convenings when appropriate (costs covered by A2)
- Are willing to work out of members’ offices when appropriate and attend regular training on community organizing.
The position will involve up to 40 hours per week working from 9am to 5pm (or something similar) on a typical week. We expect you to be flexible – for example when dealing with emergencies, in scheduling meetings with community leaders, or getting a grant submitted by the deadline.
