Job Description Summary:
The In-Home Caregiver is a member of the team who works under the supervision of the Administrator to perform various personal care services as necessary to meet the client’s needs, according to the plan of care. The Caregiver is responsible for observing clients, reporting these observations, and documenting observations and care performed.
The Caregiver will be assigned in a manner that promotes quality, continuity, and safety
of a client’s care.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Responsibilities of the Caregiver include, but are not limited to the following:
Wear identification badge at all times
Personal care tasks to include:
Bathing
Grooming, including oral care
Assist the client with dressing and undressing
Assist the client with toileting activities
Assist in feeding the client, if necessary
Feed clients who are unable to feed themselves
Support good skin care to prevent skin breakdown (i.e. turn and reposition client, actively encourage movement)
Provide client with help walking and transferring
Observe client’s physical, mental and emotional conditions
Report any change to the supervisor
Document observed changes
Assist client in the self-administration of medication (medication reminder)
Homemaker tasks to include:
Maintain the home in an optimum state of cleanliness and safety depending upon client resources
Perform the functions generally undertaken by the customary homemaker, including:
Preparation of meals
Doing dishes
Laundry, including:
Sorting laundry
Washing and drying laundry
Folding and putting away laundry
Shopping
Household chores
Companion tasks to include:
Provide companionship for the client
Accompanying the client to doctors’ appointments, recreational outings, or shopping
Perform casual cosmetic assistance, including:
Brushing the client's hair
Assisting with make-up
Filing and polishing nails, but not clipping nails
Transportation, including:
Using agreed upon vehicle
Keeping track of related reports and mileage
Socialization, including:
Providing encouragement
Being supportive when the client is lonely, bereaved, or depressed
Report to the supervisor any incidents, problems, emergencies, or changes in client
Follow principles of infection control and Universal Precautions
Identifies and participates in performance improvement activities
Assist in providing a safe environment and promote quality patient care through adherence to established policies, procedures and standards
Ensure client’s rights are adhered to. These include but are not limited to the right to:
Privacy and dignity while care is being provided
Accept or refuse care
Confidentiality of their information
Use equipment properly and in a safe manner
Maintain appropriate work records.
Qualifications:
High school diploma, preferred
Preferably a minimum of one (1) year of documented experience
Must consent to and pass a background screening process
Have a baseline and annual TB test on record with Seniors Helping Seniors Kansas City Metro South
Complete a self-reported health history
Have a Health Assessment form on record with Seniors Helping Seniors Kansas City Metro South
Self-directing with the ability to work with little direct supervision
Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
Ability to express spoken and/or written ideas in English
Works as a team member
Job Limitations:
The Caregiver does not function in any manner viewed as the practice of nursing according to practice acts. Specifically, the Caregiver worker will not administer medications, take physician’s orders or perform procedures requiring the training, knowledge and skill of a Licensed Nurse.
Working Conditions:
Contact with clients in their living environment. May be required to respond in an emergency situation. Travel required. Position includes tasks that have the potential for a medium level of exposure to blood and other potentially infectious material (OPIM) such as body fluids/tissues..
Personal Protective Equipment:
May include gloves, mask, eye protection, and disposable outer covering.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand, walk, squat, bend, kneel, reach, twist, push and pull. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
